Lisa Gross - 2010 University of Michigan Club of Greater Washington DC Scholarship Winner - CONGRATULATIONS!

Lisa Gross
We have a winner! The University of Michigan Washington, DC Club 2010 Scholarship is awarded to Lisa Gross from WT Woodson High School in Fairfax, VA. Lisa has been admitted to the School of Art & Design and was elated upon hearing the news of her award. “Getting into Michigan and then being awarded the 2010 University of Michigan Club of DC Scholarship definitely rank as two of the most exciting things that have ever happened to me! You probably heard me screaming with surprise and happiness when you called–as well as my parents’ enthusiastic response in the background! I am grateful and honored by the award.”

Lisa knew she wanted to attend Michigan when she visited the University earlier this year. “I knew that the University of Michigan was where I wanted to be when I visited last winter—even though Ann Arbor got 7 inches of snow during the few days the DC area didn’t last winter! The friendly students and the encouraging professors made me want to join the University of Michigan community. Thank you!”

Some excerpts from Lisa’s application:

  • “I chose the University of Michigan because it offers me a unique opportunity to attend one of the top academic institutions in the country and an exceptional school of art and design.  Although I love photography and art in general, I want to be able to take a variety of academic classes in addition to my art classes.  Unlike some traditional art schools, Michigan has great professors teaching intriguing courses in different subjects.”
  • “Students we passed greeted my tour guide by name, and strangers stopped to offer me help, directions, or suggestions–in spite of a snowstorm that would have had Virginians hibernating.  I realized why all the alumni I’ve met are enthusiastic about the years spent at Michigan.  The friendly, diverse student body, supportive and encouraging faculty, and a great campus complemented by the wonderful Ann Arbor community, make Michigan the ideal university for me. “
  • “This scholarship, in addition to my plans to continue working part-time while in college, will help me achieve my dream of becoming a Wolverine.”

Lisa has a diverse set of interests and experiences, including working as a teacher’s aide with developmentally and learning disabled children from K-5th grade, photography, and the recipient of the Regional 2010 Scholastic Art Gold Key Portfolio Award, the highest regional honor granted for student artwork.  Although the jury is still out on her career goals, Lisa is hoping to have a career that incorporates her love of art, especially photography, with her interests in working with special needs children.

This year’s scholarship was extremely competitive with nearly 60 applicants.  Congratulations, Lisa!

·         “The diversity at the University of Michigan campus is unparalleled by any other campus in the nation… the Michigan campus is a "melting pot," in which distinct groups bring shared morals and values to strengthen, not weaken the campus and larger community infrastructure.”
Nabeel has a diverse set of interests and experiences. Already he has had a biomedical research internship at the National Institutes of Health, spent time volunteering at a nursing home, and interned for a Member of the English Parliament in the House of Lords, also spending time meeting such influentials as Prime Minister Tony Blair. Nabeel is also Senior Captain on the Varsity Tennis team and is an accomplished vocalist, participating in the Chamber Choir, Men’s Ensemble and the Show Choir.

Some excerpts from his application:· “The University of Michigan has everything I want in a school. I am interested in pre-med and U-M has an excellent science program.”· I love sports and what better university is there for great football?· U-M is a university that welcomes diversity and is looking towards the future demographics of the nation and preparing young people like me to be able to serve.” Miles’ condition of Type 1 Diabetes, diagnosed at age six, has greatly influenced his longer-term professional goals. “My goal is to contribute, in particular, to those minority communities that lack sufficient doctors. I want to combine my personal experiences and what I will learn in school to become a caring doctor in an inner-city hospital or clinic.” Miles believes a U of M degree will give him the foundation he will need to continue his studies in medical school.

Kendal Sparks -- 2003 University of Michigan Club of Washington, DC Scholarship Winner

The winner of the Club Scholarship for the 2002-03 school year is Kendal Sparks from University Park, Maryland and a graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt. Kendal will be a first-year student pursuing a dual degree in the College of Music Theatre and Literature, Science & the Arts (LS&A). After spending a number of years taking singing, acting, dancing and piano lessons, Kendal's ultimate goal is to work as a singer and actor on Broadway. Also having a strong interest in politics, Kendal plans to major in Political Science in LS&A.

Kendal was thrilled to receive the scholarship. "I am truly honored to be offered this scholarship. I cannot even express how excited I am to be headed to Michigan next year."

Kendal's passion, both in and out of the classroom, is infectious. In high school, Kendal was actively involved with his school's musical theater program in the Office of President of the Thespian Honor Society as well as President of Musical Theater. Kendal directed, produced and acted in a little known musical, "Songs for a New World". His ideal role on Broadway would have to be playing Jean Valjean in "Les Miserables." While acting is Kendal's passion, it certainly doesn't come at the expense of serving his community. He has even found ways to link the two. Kendal volunteers four days a week at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC as a music and arts therapist. He works directly with patients providing them with creative distractions from their pain and discomfort. During his time at Children's, Kendal is also conducting research on the effects of hospitalization on early childhood development. This served as his thesis paper in his senior year."I have done everything I can come up with to make Michigan a reality for me, just short of sending a copy of 'Ain't Too Proud to Beg' by the Temptations". There was no need for Kendal to beg. He was a unanimous selection by the UMDC Alumni Club Scholarship Committee, making alumni in the interview teary-eyed as he described his visit to the campus in Ann Arbor.Because of Kendal's performance inside and outside the classroom, he received many prestigious honors. He was the recipient of the Washington Post Arts Award, a Maryland Distinguished Scholar Finalist, and was voted "Most Likely to Succeed" and "Friendliest" by his senior class peers

Kendal's enthusiasm, passion and zeal for the University of Michigan will make him a wonderful ambassador for the maize-n-blue wherever he goes. Upon receiving the UMDC scholarship, solidifying his decision to turn down Yale University for U of M, one of Kendal's frst acts was to head to the "goblue" website and create his new E-mail address! "This scholarship is the reason I am able to go, and I am eternally grateful! Go Blue!"
