Public Service Intern Program (PSIP)
Public Service Intern Program: Volunteers Needed for Summer 2010!
The University of Michigan's Public Service Intern Program (PSIP) assists talented students from all academic disciplines in securing summer internship positions in Washington. Students intern at Hill, federal agency and judicial offices, special interest and advocacy organizations, museums, non-profits, and print and broadcast media. Entering its 40th year, PSIP is one of the nation's largest and most respected internship programs. PSIP is sponsored and administered by the University’s Career Center, and each summer relies on the support of Michigan alums in the area to ensure a meaningful experience for PSIP students.
PSIP is currently seeking D.C. area alums to assist the 60-80 students who will spend their summer here in Washington. There are three ways for you to help:
1) Serve as a mentor. We are looking for alumni who are willing to volunteer as mentors; as a mentor, you would be expected to meet with your student at least once early on in their internship. Mentoring is a small time commitment, but you can make a huge difference in a student's DC experience by:
- Offering career advice and networking opportunties
- Helping students to navigate their summer and take advantage of the District
- Sharing your own story, including why you moved to D.C. and how your career has evolved
2) Take on a PSIP intern in your office. Most students have already submitted applications and are beginning to interview. However, if your office needs an intern for the summer, please send information (to the contacts below) about the position, including intern responsibilities and application instructions. We will provide this info to this year's cohort of PSIPers.
3) Offer suggestions for a summer event. If your office/organization offers tours, speaker events, or other programs, we would love to schedule a time for the group to visit. Additionally, if you have ideas for outings, tours, shows, speakers, etc, please let us know.
Alums will be matched with 1 or 2 students, and there may be a metor/mentee reception in May or June. You will be matched with your student in May.
