From Soccer Coach Dave Burgett:
In the fall 2008 season, we fielded three coed teams in local D.C. leagues, one of which made it to the championship final. We are currently in the winter season (playing outdoors) with one team. Pre-season practices are already underway for the spring season and there are quite a few promising new players. In the spring season we will have two coed teams playing in open leagues (one Saturdays and the other Sundays) and another vying for the CAN championship in the 11 v. 11 division. This year CAN reportedly will allow clubs to enter a second team in the 7 v. 7 division, which we may be able to do if a few additional players (particularly women players) step forward. It is not too late—practices will be held Feb. 7 and 15. Contact Coach Dave Burgett at DWBurgett@comcast.net for more information.
From Volleyball Coach Beth Frank:
The Michigan Club of Greater Washington, D.C. also sponsors two volleyball teams. In 2008 the volleyball teams were reorganized after a several year hiatus. This season the competitive team has a strong returning line up and should be a power house. The recreational team had a huge response and we have a lot of enthusiastic players with a broad range of experience. Both teams have a lot of potential playing against teams that have been playing together for quite some time. The games are played at Hoops Sports Magic in Chantilly, Virg. on Sunday afternoons from January through March. It's a great facility and on Sunday afternoons Chantilly really is not that far—plus we help arrange carpools. Please contact Beth Frank at elfrank@comcast.net for additional information about our volleyball teams.
From Basketball Coach Stephen Broyles:
The U-Michigan Alumni basketball enters into another year of CAN league play after winning its Division in 2008 and making it to the “Elite Eight” of the playoffs. The U-Michigan Alumni Basketball team is a co-rec team that plays competitively from January to March and recreationally throughout the year in pick-up games and scrimmages against other alumni and local teams. If you are interested in playing please contact Stephen Broyles at sbroyles@magi-group.com with a preferred email address and phone number. It’s not too late to join!

From Softball Coach Adam Pfau:
If you are interested in playing on the UM CAN Softball team this year, please send an email to both coaches, Adam Pfau (adampfau@gmail.com) and Joe Friedman (friedman_joe@hotmail.com), with your name, email address, phone number, year you graduated from University of Michigan or the year(s) you attended U of M, and whether you played varsity softball or baseball at the college level (for any school). I will make sure you get on the distribution list and receive the Evites for the games. This is a very casual league so your softball skill-level is not important. It does help if you went to the University of Michigan (at least 1 semester), but you can still play if you didn't attend…just make sure to let me know. We have 14 regular season games played either weeknights on the Mall or Ellipse at 6:30 or on the Ohio Dr. Fields on a few Saturdays. There is no cost to play in the regular season, but there is a fee to attend the August tourney. The season will start sometime around mid-April. We will likely hold 1 or 2 "practices" in early April to get acquainted. We like to have a good time and compete (at least in the August tourney), and we're always looking for fresh players, so please come out.
Keep track of us on our CAN page!
Thanks and GO BLUE!
From Flag Football Coach Gabe Marzonie:
In 2008, the Michigan Flag Football team celebrated its third league championship since the beginning of the CAN. The team went 19-0 including a dominating run in the pre-season charity tournament (4-0), an exciting and thrilling week-to-week undefeated regular season (10-0) and a spectacular performance in the final tournament (5-0) to cap the season with a win in the “grand daddy of them all” PLUS winning bragging rights for the rest of the year.
Michigan is one of the oldest teams in the 56 team league that makes up CAN football and continually fields a competitive and alumni filled roster year after year. With scrimmages, practices, a season-long schedule of games, parties, game watching, social gatherings and happy hours – the Michigan team not only bonds during the football season – but throughout the year. The key to the success of this team is based on the relationships of alumni and non-alumni both on and off the field and we welcome new faces!
New to the DC area? Want to meet young professionals like yourself? Looking to satisfy need to get on the field and let it all go?
